DESCRIPTION:Next February 21st at 14h30 (Wednesday) we will have our first AI debate in room 1-38 @ IST Taguspark.\nFor this first debate we propose the topic “The optimal pace for AI research”:\nPeter Higgs argued to be “difficult to imagine how [he] would ever have enough peace and quiet in the present sort of climate to do what [he] did in 1964”, referring to the early work that was awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics. In academia, pressure to publish is indeed higher than ever. This is even more evident in Artificial Intelligence, with the main conferences breaking, year after year, records in the number of submissions. How is the field impacted by this pressure? What are the cons or pros of publishing instead of debating AI ideas? Is there any space for long-term works? Does pressure increase productivity or just promotes the publication of incremental results? In one question: what should be the optimal pace for doing research in AI?”\nTo help us thinking about the subject, we will have different viewpoints from a great panel of invited speakers:\nProf. Hélder Coelho (Faculdade de Ciências, BioISI, Mind-Brain College)\nProfª Inês Lynce (INESC-ID and Instituto Superior Técnico)\nProfª Ana Paiva (INESC-ID and Instituto Superior Técnico)\nIt will be really amazing if everyone can join the discussion!
