Abstract:

Geography helps us to understand and map the world and to navigate in it. Geospatial data and location references help us to understand spatial relations and characteristics of diverse documents. The talk will discuss some aspects of the development of geospatial search engines such as crawling, geoparsing/extraction, geocoding, and analysis. It will further showcase experiences in developing geospatial search in various settings and countries. An emphasis will be put on recent work in gazetteer analysis, looking into quality indicators for the GeoNames dataset, which is widely used for geoparsing and geocoding. Open questions and possible future work will hopefully start a motivating discussion.
