OBJECTIVES | FUNCTIONSObjectives:Knowledge and proof of age are essential for all human beings. Forensic Age Estimation (FAE) plays a crucial role in the judicial system, not only in identifying cadavers but also in assessing theage of living individuals, minors, and the undocumented. The number of individuals referred for FAE by legal authorities has significantly increased in recent years. This scholarship aims tosupport PhD-level studies on FAE by exploiting a new methodology that combines deep learning technology and knowledge graphs. The goal is to research and develop a new Decision SupportSystem (DSS) that will improve the accuracy of Dental Age Assessment and reduce bias.
Work Plan:(1) *Survey recent work* on the combination of deep learning technologies and knowledge graphs in forensic age estimation (FAE), specifically focusing on dental age assessment, as well as recentadvancements in age estimation methods and Decision Support Systems (DSS) in medical diagnostics;(2) *Study and research suitable data sources*, such as dental radiographs, medical imaging, and age-related biomarkers, for use in the development of a DSS for dental age estimation, ensuringdata quality and relevance for improving age estimation accuracy; (3) *Identify and research how deep learning methods and knowledge graphs* can be leveraged to enhance the accuracy of age assessments, reduce biases, and create a robust decision-making framework for forensic experts;(4) *Develop a prototype of a Decision Support System (DSS)*, integrating deep learning-based models with knowledge graphs for dental age assessment, ensuring that the system is userfriendly, efficient, and scalable for real-world forensic applications;
(5) *Conduct experimental comparative evaluations* of existing methods against the developed DSS, measuring performance in terms of accuracy, speed, and bias reduction in age estimation;(6) *Write technical reports* on the development process, experimental findings, and evaluation results, including an assessment of the DSS's potential impact on improving forensic practices related to age estimation.
