In the Media: Arlindo Oliveira makes the case for science as an economic driver in Público
Following the recent announcement of €27.2 million in funding for INESC-ID’s SAIL project, Arlindo Oliveira, INESC-ID researcher, Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico and President of the INESC group, contextualises the importance of the Teaming for Excellence programme i in an opinion piece published in Público. Arlindo Oliveira analyses what this programme means for Portugal, with six new national projects of this kind recently secured.
The researcher emphasises the determinant role that private non-profit R&D institutes have played in Portugal’s success in attracting this type of funding, namely INESC-ID with SAIL and INESC TEC with INESCTEC.OCEAN. He argues that successive governments’ commitment to long-term initiatives such as these is a positive sign at a time when media pressure tends to favour immediate, visible results.
