PRR INESC-ID

Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Lisboa (INESC-ID)

OVERVIEW

INESC-ID is a well-established, with more than 20 years old, research unit following a clear strategic vision based on four pillars: scientific excellence, internationalization, technology transfer, and societal impact. Recently, we realized that our dedication to scientific training needed to evolve and become a fifth pillar: talent development.

To ensure INESC-ID’s ability to thrive in an increasingly competitive and dynamic environment, it is increasingly relevant to invest in talent development. At the same time, as attracting talent internationally, cultivating talent internally can pave the way for long-term sustainability and growth.

For 2025-2029, INESC-ID defined a list of strategic goals that we introduce following the 5 pillars: Scientific Excellence, Internationalization, Technology Transfer, Societal Impact, Talent Development.

The Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Lisboa (INESC-ID) project is funded by Next Generation EU through the Plano de Recuperação e Resiliência (PRR).

EXPECTED RESULTS

INESC-ID aims to obtain a reinforced and more resilient computational infrastructure, capable of supporting the growing needs of large-scale AI, health, and data-intensive research projects. A key expected result is the creation of a Trusted Research Environment for the secure preservation, management, and processing of sensitive data, made available to the institute’s research community.

INESC-ID also aims to ensure that its main laboratories remain aligned with the scientific and technological needs of its four Thematic Lines. Equipment renewal will support stronger experimental capacity across Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering, including in areas such as distributed energy systems and smart interfaces.

Another expected result is the improvement of the institute’s ability to communicate the impact of its research. New data-visualisation and communication tools will make research progress, key indicators, and project outcomes more visible and accessible to researchers, partners, visitors, and the wider public.
