INESC-ID (Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores: Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Lisboa) is a private, non-profit institution dedicated to advanced Research, Development and Innovation (R&D&I) in the fields of Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering (CSE+ECE). Established in 1999, it is jointly owned by Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) and INESC – Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores.

Identified by FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia) as one of the top 10 Portuguese research units, it holds the status of Public Interest and is an Associate Laboratory of the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education since 2004.

INESC-ID is organised into four Thematic Lines, which serve as unifying themes for making the most relevant contributions to current societal issues:

• Life and Health Technology
• Energy Transition
• Security and Privacy 

Aligned with this strategic direction, INESC-ID’s research, development, and innovation activities span 10 Scientific Areas and include a team of nearly 200 researchers, 200 students, and more than 50 research, technical and support staff members, along with numerous fellowships from various universities and polytechnic institutes.

This collective strength supports our goal of positioning INESC-ID as the leading research centre for combined CSE+ECE in Portugal.
