Epistasis Detection on Heterogeneous AI-Enhanced Platforms (Epistasis Detection on Heterogeneous AI-Enhanced P)

Type: International Partnership Project

Duration: from 2022 Nov 01 to 2023 Dec 31

Financed by: FCT/Google

Prime Contractor: R - INESC-ID Lisboa (Other) - Lisboa, Portugal

Project Web Site: https://rnca.fccn.pt/en/projetos/

Epistasis detection is a computationally intensive bioinformatics application that searches for statistical association between combinations of single nucleotide polymorphisms, a common type of DNA sequence variation, and characteristics of a given population. Accelerating epistasis detection searches is important, since revealing previously undiscovered associations between genotype and phenotype can be of use in the context of several applications with high societal impact. These include, for example, helping to explain disease causation and enabling personalized treatment of more conditions. This project will leverage state-of-the-art hardware available on the Google Cloud Platform (GCP), some of which is yet to be explored for epistasis detection purposes. As a result of the research and development to be carried out in the context of this project, novel highly scalable algorithms focused on making efficient utilization of the particular features of each targeted architecture are to be investigated. Finally, the methods developed with the assistance of the GCP are expected to be disseminated at top international scientific conferences and journals.
