Smart Transformer for Sustainable Grids (SmarTrafo)

Type: National Project Project

Duration: from 2018 Oct 01 to 2022 Sep 30

Financed by: FCT

Prime Contractor: R - INESC-ID Lisboa (Other) - Lisboa, Portugal

This project aims to build and test a Smart Transformer (SmarTrafo), with modular structure and high controllability and minimum losses to guarantee a Sustainable Grid. The SmarTrafo is to be operated at high frequency, with minimum filtering requirements. To achieve this goal, the project comprises: 1) The design of a High Frequency Transformer; 2) Assessment and development of novel power electronic high frequency converter topologies and novel dedicated modulation approaches; 3) Design the system controllers to guarantee that the SmartTrafo output voltages are sinusoidal, with user defined frequency (50Hz or 60 Hz) and is able to mitigate Power Quality problems (voltage sag, voltage swell, unbalanced AC power supplies, unbalanced loads); 3) To build a scaled model laboratory prototype and test the SmarTrafo for several operation conditions.
