Stochastic Dynamics of Collective Action (STOCA)

Type: National Project Project

Duration: from 2016 Jun 01 to 2020 Nov 30

Financed by: FCT PTDC/MAT-STA/3358/2014

Prime Contractor: Universidade do Minho (University) - Braga, Portugal

The goal is to understand how it is that groups of individuals - which can be cells, humans, companies, associations, institutions, cities or even countries - of a community, can self-organize so that cooperative collective action (CCA) prevails over non-CCA. This problem is ubiquitous, given the latest developments in, e.g., Environmental Sciences, Political Science, Biology, Ecology and Economics[14-17]. To this end, we intend to further develop and implement methodologies, such as those referred to above, which we shall apply here to finite populations, where stochastic events prevail, since the community sizes are often too small to afford ignoring such finite size effects. We will seek to find, at every scale, the most adequate mathematical description of the co-evolution of different processes such as cooperation, networks and signaling, in the study of the emergence of CCA, and in situations where communities are often at risk of survival in its absence.
