Type: International Project Project

Duration: from 2022 Mar 01 to 2024 Feb 24

Financed by: European Commission

Prime Contractor: U - ISCTE (University)

Online hate speech is increasingly visible in social media, targeting individuals based on their group membership (e.g., ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, religion). It refers to bias-motivated, derogatory language targeted at a person/group because of their group membership and leads to avoidance and aggression. A central characteristic of hate speech is that it is dehumanizing and is used to discriminate, denigrate, and harm the target. Ultimately it can lead to hate crimes, or genocide, as discrimination and dehumanization are well known early stages of human genocide.
We combine social psychological and linguistic approaches with cutting edge data science, using natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) to:
a) analyse the content and propagation of online hate speech  as well as online counter speech in user generated content (e.g., tweets);
b) create models for its automatic detection, covering both direct and indirect forms of online hate speech, the later usually neglected in literature, which makes it difficult to evaluate the magnitude of this phenomenon, and c) offer culturally sensitive and tailored guidelines and tools for effective prevention and countering narratives to be used by individuals, civil society organizations, and policy makers.
