Upgrade da Experiência ATLAS – CERN/FIS-PAR/0033/2019 (ATLAS)

Type: National Project Project

Duration: from 2019 Oct 01 to 2021 Sep 30

Financed by: FCT

Prime Contractor: LIP - Laboratório de Instrumentação e Física Experimental de Partículas (Other) - Lisboa, Portugal

The ATLAS Collaboration is currently implementing Phase I of the detector upgrade. Our contributions to Phase I are completed or in installation: the upgrade of the TileCal calorimeter laser calibration system, the inclusion in the muon trigger of the cells of the TileCal D-layer, and the replacement of the TileCal gap and cryostat scintillators, to recover from sensitivity loss due to radiation ageing. The Phase I Upgrade will be followed by 3 years of data taking at twice the LHC design instantaneous luminosity. The collaboration is now preparing for HL-LHC running with the Phase II upgrade program, to be completed in 2024-25, which will allow ATLAS to operate at luminosity up to 7.5 times above LHC design. Funding for activities supporting data taking and data analysis is requested in a different proposal. The activities covered in this two-year project are the ones related with the planned ATLAS Phase II Upgrade. In summary, this project has three main lines of development: the TileCal, with R&D on the new HV system (this is the line of development where Inesc-ID contributes) and the ageing of TileCal optics; the ATLAS trigger, with the new HTT co-processor and open ended R&D on the application of GPUs to trigger processing; and prospective physics studies.
