ICS 2026 Conference: Artificial Intelligence in the Public Sphere
On 9 July, ICS-ULisboa holds its Annual Conference, this year dedicated to the theme Artificial Intelligence in the Public Sphere, exploring the social, political, and institutional impacts of artificial intelligence. Drawing on multiple disciplinary perspectives, the meeting will discuss how AI is transforming governance, trust in institutions, knowledge production, power relations, and forms of democratic participation.
Organised by Jussara Rowland (INESC-ID, ICS-ULisboa) and Pedro Magalhães (ICS-ULisboa), the programme includes two keynote lectures: Stephan Grimmelikhuijsen (Utrecht University) will address AI, algorithmic governance, and democratic legitimacy, while Susan Halford (University of Bristol) will explore the relationship between AI, social change, and sociodigital futures.
The conference will also feature two thematic panels. The first, AI, Governance, and Public Trust, brings together Inês Campos (ICS-ULisboa), Raquel Brízida Castro (ANACOM), and Patrícia Silva (UAveiro). The second, Shaping AI Futures: Knowledge, Power and Participation, will feature INESC-ID researcher Ana Paiva (INESC-ID, IST-ULisboa), Helena Machado (CIES-Iscte), and Robert Clowes (IFILNOVA).
