How can everyday connected devices become a cybersecurity risk?

In a recent interview with CNN Portugal, Miguel Pupo Correia, INESC-ID researcher and President of the Executive Committee, commented on the cyberattack that affected supermarket chains across Europe. He explained how the integration of small internet-connected computers into equipment such as refrigerators and freezers can create vulnerabilities that may be exploited by cybercriminals. The researcher also reflected on the possible motivations behind the attack and discussed measures that could help prevent similar incidents in the future.

The attack followed another cybersecurity breach, which took place last week, involving an IT company that had previously provided services to the Portuguese Intelligence Information System (SIRP), which resulted in the exposure of non-classified information linked to Portugal’s intelligence services.
