What can a computational analysis of the language of pain tell us about the lived experience of chronic pain?

Diogo Nunes, a PhD student at INESC-ID’s Human Language Technologies (HLT) research area and Instituto Superior Técnico, tells us a great many things about his doctoral research work in a short piece published in Público (in PT) titled “Todos nós, garantidamente, já sentimos dor física” (“All of us, surely, have experienced physical pain”).

Diogo’s piece is published within the series “Conta-nos a tua ciência” (“Tell us about your science”), in which PhD students at the University of Lisbon are given an online space to share their research — as well as its importance and societal relevance — with Público readers.
