“Vencer o Adamastor” Award — 2nd Edition now open for submissions!

INESC and the Portuguese newspaper Público are continuing the Vencer o Adamastor Award (Prémio Vencer o Adamastor, roughly translating to “Beating Adamastor”, a reference to the mythical stone giant who guarded maritime passage through the Cape of Good Hope and is featured in Luis de Camões’ Os Lusíadas) — worth €20,000 and designed to recognize innovative work by young scientists, developed in Portugal, in the fields of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), including electrical engineering and computation.

This will be the second year the distinction will be awarded, following the 2022 edition of Vencer o Adamastor, which highlighted the work of Gonçalo Correia.

The reference to Adamastor heralds back to the creation of INESC in the 1980s, by José Tribolet and João Lourenço Fernandes, with the clear aim of battling the chronic scientific and technological lag that Portugal suffered from.

Vencer o Adamastor will be awarded to the candidate who demonstrates not only a clear ability to produce high quality scientific work, a vision for future scientific and technological developments in their respective area of research, as well as the potential to make a significant contribution to the future scientific development of the country, as a researcher, a scientist, a teacher and a future leader.

More details on the award are available here and the its regulations here, with an application deadline of 16 October 2023.
