On 16 May, INESC-ID took its research to the central atrium of Instituto Superior Técnico’s Oeiras campus, joining the latest edition of the Técnico Open Day, held this year alongside the Técnico Family Day, which brought together science, engineering and hands-on activities throughout the day.

Among laboratory visits, workshops and technology demonstrations for all ages, around 200 visitors passed through the campus. Alongside INESC-ID, student groups and research centres opened their doors, from robotics and nanosatellites to bioengineering and game design.

At the INESC-ID stand, visitors were invited to explore two demonstrations under the theme “The Magic of Language Technologies (and more).” The first, presented by PhD student Carolina Gomes and researcher Luísa Coheur, showed VetScribe, an AI-powered app that can support veterinarians, transforming spoken notes instantly into generating medical reports automatically from consultations and helping diagnose diseases. The second, presented by researchers Sérgio Paulo and Alberto Abad, explored voice synthesis and conversational AI: with just ten seconds of a visitor’s voice, the system could reproduce it in the voice of public figures like Cristiano Ronaldo or former President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, or generate entirely new, unexpected sentences in that same voice.

The GAIPS Lab from INESC-ID, also opened its doors for guided visits throughout the day, with PhD students António Fernandes and Patrícia Piedade and researcher Rui Prada welcoming visitors to the group’s work on artificial intelligence, robots and human-agent interaction.

INESC-ID was also present through the Engenharia para Todos project, led by Maria João Verdasca, which offered hands-on activities for children and families, from soldering small electronic toys to building paper circuits.
