In the Media: The future of AI and the SAIL project with Arlindo Oliveira and Inês Lynce in ECO’s “Podcast.IA”
Could excessive use of generative AI cause cognitive atrophy, even among programmers? That’s one of the challenges Arlindo Oliveira adresses in the seventh episode of ECO’s “Podcast.IA”, followed by Inês Lynce introducing the SAIL project.
Arlindo Oliveira, INESC-ID researcher and president of INESC, opened the episode with an overview of the current state of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the European landscape. While maintaining an optimistic point of view, the researcher emphasised the importance of aligning technological progress with quality of life, human rights and a sensible use of AI.
In the second part of the episode, Inês Lynce, researcher and President of the Board of Directors at INESC-ID, introduced SAIL (Sustainable Artificial Intelligence Laboratory), a project that recently secured €27.2 million in funding through a Horizon Europe call. SAIL aims to create a dedicated centre to sustainable AI, positioning Europe as a global leader in responsible, human-centric AI development. Inês Lynce described SAIL as a capacity-building project, one that upgrades an institution and gives it a focused mission. “This is a unique opportunity, given the funding it carries, to have an impact at national and international level that is different,” she added.
